Its energy, in the form of sunlight, drives the planet's climate, weather patterns, and photosynthesis in plants, which is the basis of the food chain. Size and Composition

 The Sun is about 109 times the diameter of Earth and approximately 333,000 times its mass. It is composed mainly of hydrogen (about 74% of its mass) and helium (about 24% of its mass), with trace amounts of other elements.

Structure

 The Sun has several distinct layers. The core is the central region where nuclear fusion occurs, generating the Sun's energy. Surrounding the core are the radiative zone and the convective zone, through which energy is transported to the surface. Above the surface lies the photosphere, which emits visible light, and the outer atmosphere consists of the chromosphere and the corona.

Temperature 

The temperature of the Sun varies throughout its layers. The core reaches temperatures of around 15 million degrees Celsius (27 million degrees Fahrenheit), while the photosphere has a temperature of about 5,500 degrees Celsius (9,932 degrees Fahrenheit). The temperature rises dramatically in the corona, reaching millions of degrees Celsius.
